Staying Safe on Your ATV

Millions of Americans use ATVs for work and pleasure. But if ridden improperly, ATVs can cause severe injury or even death. ATVs handle differently from other vehicles and it can be easy to lose control.

To keep safe, follow these guidelines:

  • Take an ATV training course
  • Read your owner's manual BEFORE riding your ATV
  • Ride an ATV that's appropriate for your age. Riders must be:
    • Six years old to operate an ATV with an engine under 70cc
    • 12 years old for 70cc to 90cc
    • 16 years old above 90cc

    • Never carry a passenger, as it may upset the balance of your ATV and cause you to lose control
    • Wear a good helmet and goggles, as well as boots, gloves, heavy trousers and a long-sleeved shirt
    • Stay sober
    • Maintain safe speeds and don't attempt stunts
    • Don't drive on pavement; ATVs are not designed for paved surfaces
    • Supervise kids under 16
    • Avoid driving on public roads, even if dirt or gravel; it may be illegal, and you might not be able to avoid collisions with other vehicles on the road
    • Keep to designated trails and ride responsibly
    • Use the buddy system
    • Inspect your ATV before riding it
    • Approach hills and turns with caution, and be extra careful in unfamiliar areas
