A Guide to Personal Watercraft Safety
No matter what you call them - personal watercraft, jet skis, Ski Doos or Waverunners - personal watercraft can be great fun. But they can also be dangerous. Take the time to read all the manufacturer's guides and labels for your watercraft before riding, and follow the checklist below to keep yourself and those around you safe.
- Wear your lifejacket. It should fit you properly and be approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
- If you have an engine stop lanyard, securely attach it to your wrist or lifejacket. If your model doesn't have one, make sure to learn the safe re-boarding procedures detailed in your manual.
- Pay attention to what's happening around you. Constantly look around for other personal watercraft, boats, skiers, swimmers and divers.
- Stay sober. Alcohol and personal watercraft do not mix.
- Avoid wake-jumping or riding too close to other boats.
- Make sure everyone who operates your personal watercraft is of legal age.
- Know the federal, state and local boating laws and observe them.
- Know the waters you'll be riding in.
- Ride at a safe speed and always be prepared to stop or turn in an emergency.
- Learn and understand all the features of your personal watercraft BEFORE you take it out for a ride.
- Know the right-of-way rules.
- Stay within sight of the shore, but away from residential and congested areas if possible.
